Don Von Tress

A native of Greencastle, Indiana, songwriter Don Von Tress penned one of the most successful crossover singles in the history of country music, as he recounts it, “just fooling around on the guitar and a drum machine” one day in 1990. Though first recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys and then The Marcy Brothers, it was Billy Ray Cyrus’s 1992 version of Von Tress’s “Achy Breaky Heart” that launched the song into the stratosphere and the history books. Von Tress’s composition broke records across the globe, topped Country and Top 40 charts, and earned two Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year. In 2017, Cyrus recorded a fresh take on his signature song with members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Rolling Stone described it as “more faithful to songwriter Von Tress’s “swampy demo.”
